Default Another break-in oil question

Just bought a 2003 TT for the wife and have a question about the first oil change. It sounds like there are 2 types of conventional wisdom on this board:

- Change the oil after the first 1000 miles (break-in period)
- Change the oil after the first 5000 miles (to let the "break-in" oil seal the rings)

However, this car had been sitting on the dealer's lot and in the sun for 7 months (and only had 2.4 miles on it, go figure). Should the oil in this car be changed as soon as possible? Has the oil undergone any serious breakdown while it has been sitting around?

You've had no engine heat build up to break down the oil, wait for the 5K mark.

Default Re: Another break-in oil question

My previous VW and current Audi dealer....
do not believe in those long oil change intervals on factory free oil change charts (and neither do I). They recommend initial oil out long before 5000mi and believe 5K, not 10K miles is better interval for oil and filter changes after that. Heat breakdown is not necessarily the primary factor requiring initial oil changes. Some factors: type of driving style, stop/go vs open roads, number times engine is typically started and shut down in a day, etc.
I am proponent of early and frequent oil change(s) and easy break-in for entire drivetrain....cheap insurance!

Of course your dealer supports shorter intervals, they're hoping you'll spend more $ for oil changes
