Default Another childhood hero....

I'm sure Chris Lloyd and other expat Brits remember the Goon Show. It was widely considered to be the inspiration for Monty Python. Milligan also wrote "Puckoon", without question the funniest book I've ever read.<ul><li><a href="http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,659393,00.html">http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,659393,00.html</a</li></ul>

Spike Milligna, that famous printing error. So great, so touched, so crazed. RIP

Default A Milligan poem, "Hamlet"

Hamlet

Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
'I'll do a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use,
2B or not 2B?'

~~~~
or...
Soldier Freddy
Soldier Freddy
Was never ready,
But Soldier Neddy,
Unlike Freddy
Was always ready
And steady.
That's why,
When soldier Neddy
Is-outside-Buckingham-Palace-on-guard-in-the-pouring-wind-and-rain-being-steady-and-ready,
Freddie-
Is home in beddy.
~~~

Genius.
Lost.

:-(

Default when I lived in Berlin, ca 84-85, the BBC World Service played old Goon Shows tapes constantly

the damn funniest things you've ever heard.

Us Americans probably can't imagine what it must be to have a radical comedic voice in our midst that transforms society and is embraced and loved. To whit, our treatment of:

Buster Keaton (died broke and unknown)
Lenny Bruce (we ran him out of town, then we killed him)
Terry Southern (nobody really got him, except Kubrick)
Bill Hicks (most Americans still don't know who he was)

Aw hell, god bless the Goonies...
