Another e-mail from Audi Australia
I pointed out that Australia would be impacted if the spoiler and suspension mods became factory standard. This was Audi's response:
Nick
You are absolutely correct. The planned modifications will go into
series
production in 2000 and we will of course make them available as a
retrofitted option here if our customers believe they need the
modifications. A letter will be sent very shortly.
It was not my intent to suggest that Australia won't be affected, just
that
we don't anticipate any occurrences of these high speed situations
because
of our speed limits. Obviously, our customer is our highest priority
however and so any modifications available in Europe will of course
filter
through to Australia.
Kind regards
Anna Burgdorf

Audi Australia response
Anna,
Thank you for your reply.
A couple of concerns;
The Northern Territory has no speed limit and I have driven there at speeds of 190kmh+. Might want to take the TT for a "run"........
Stability under braking. During my brief test drive of the FWD in June I was unable to perform a hard braking stop from high speed. From discussions, it appears that braking instability can/may occur at relatively modest speeds, say 100- 120 kmh which is easily achievable on any of the freeways around Sydney or on the open road. I do not "intend" (yes officer) to drive at more than 120kmh on the open road, however I am concerned that even at these speeds stability may be questionable. Prior to acceptance of vehicle I would need to ascertain for myself that stability is OK.
Thank You,
Cameron Graham

Subject: TT handling and ESP
Dear Cameron
Thank you for your recent email to Audi regarding the TT Coupe.
In Germany, Audi is offering to retrofit modified stabilisers to TT Coupe
vehicles following a small amount of criticism about the vehicle's handling
in certain situations at high speeds, close to the limits of stability.
This is a voluntary action on behalf of Audi.
In Australia, we are not affected by this handling tendency due to the
maximum legal speed limits on our roads. The TT is tending to oversteer
when driven at the very limit of its stability, however this can only occur
at very high speeds which we cannot duplicate in this country. We are
however, closely monitoring the situation in Europe.
I understand that is it possible that ESP will become a standard feature on
all TT Coupes next year.
Yours sincerely
