Default Any obvious reasons why an engine won't turn over? >

Today for the first time, and quite unexpected, my engine wouldn't turn over. Battery was fine, starter was firing.. but the engine just wouldn't turn. I backed it out of the parking space while trying to pop the clutch and push start it but nothing. Tried the key again it fired up just fine.

Any obvious reasons for this or will I have to chase a gremlin?

No gas? That would be the most obvious reason I can offer you...

did the starter whir but not spin the engine?

Default yup

check your coolant temperature sensor. you probably need a new one (green color). it's like 6 bucks from the stealer. i had the same exact problem and that fixed it.

Default If it's not the temp sensor check the ......

battery connections/cables. Sometimes the battery contacts get dirty/corroded and enough juice gets by to fire up the starter but not enough to turn the engine.
