Anyone ever use a car auction to sell?

The good news (for other drivers) is that my mother is finally giving up her car--a 2000 Neon. The bad news is that I've got to get rid of it for her. Local dealers seem like snakes. I don't have time to put ads in the paper and deal with tire-kickers or try to run an ebay auction.
Two questions: first, is consignment at a professional auto auction a reasonable way to go? And second, are the prices quoted by Edmunds and Kelly reasonable for wholesale value of basic transportation like Neons?
I'm more concerned with getting the deal done than in extracting the last buck.

The Kelly Blue Book price is the average ASKING price which the used car was offered. It has nothing to do with the market value. Edmunds tries to report the sales price, which is more accurate.
I bought my TT at an eBay auction. If you put a low minimum bid, you will surely sell. I think professional auto auctions cater mostly to re-sellers so you will not get top price and will have to pay a fee to sell.

Is just a whole bunch of those snakes together under one roof trying to out deal each other. Seriously, You have the option of putting a reserve on the car, but unless its at or below low wholesale, you probably won't get it. The market is VERY soft right now....

Thanks.
My hope is that the invisible hand of the market will, as you say, get the snakes bidding against each other at least up to wholesale--and I'd be happy to get that. I apologize for the mis-use of the word "professional". What is the collective noun for car dealers? A "slither of dealers"?
