Default Anyone know about laser in moving vehicles?

I read somewhere that police can only use laser radar from a stationary vehicle. I'm just curious then ... I was on the highway last night and a Statie pulled up in my lane behind me and my Passport went crazy with a LASER alert. Why would they even bother if laser is useless while the vehicle is in motion? Or do they perhaps just keep the system running constantly?

Just curious ...

Default Couple possibilities....

Most likely is the deterrent effect of having the unit engaged constantly (for people w/ detectors).

Laser readings from moving vehicles are not useless, however, they are not nearly as reliable. Some jurisdictions frown on the practice.

Default Re: laser

Laser will only work in a stationary position. Also, although newer models claim otherwise my experience has been that they have terrible range when used "shooting" from behind auto glass.

Your officer may have been doing what I have done several times when observing a vehicle equipped with a detector, just pulling the trigger to see how quickly your detector will respond.

You will never beat a direct hit! Your only hope is to pick up scattered laser from another "target".

Could also use that technique to find cars w/ detectors where they're outlawed.

Ah yes, but most of those areas use the vg1 detector detector!

Default I have found that certain types of emergency lights (as well as some stop lights) will set off the L

Laser alert on our 8500.

Since getting the 8500. It has gone off behind 2 tow trucks. It went off at a stationary cop with his lights on (at a roadside work area, not speedtrap), and at one stoplight in the area keeps setting it off.

With the emergency lights on the towtruck, Laser alert went off for 2-3 miles while we were directly behind him. When he turned off, it stopped going off.

It seems to be one certain type of light bar(same mfr?). It must give off, light in the Laser frequency range. The 8500 must be super sensitive to Laser (our 7500 does not do this at all). I don't know if it is a good thing or a bad thing

Unless there is some new technology, Laser is can only be used from a stationary position.
