My girlfriend and I went up to IKEA and then onto the Jersey Gardens mall yesterday. The mall's in Elizabeth which isn't the best area in the state, but I wasn't one to be overly afraid. Still, I did remove my XM radio and hide it in the glovebox.
We were in the mall for maybe 2-3 hours. Got back to the car around 5pm and there was a note under the wiper blade to contact security, but as I was reading it a security truck pulled up. At first I thought maybe someone just backed into my car, so that's where I looked. The security woman asked me "if your doors were like that." I look over...and... shiat.
A group of 5 people, 2 adults and 3 juveniles, tried to break into my car (with intent to steal, it seems). The security/police caught them trying to get into the car and arrested all of them.
The damage seems to be to both locks and doors, and the passenger rear quarterpanel as seen in the pictures. There's a larger vertical scratch on the quarterpanel more left of that photo. Looks like their tool (screwdriver?) slipped. The passenger door also has a crease in it.. they must have really hit the lock hard to bend the surrounding panel. The glass on the windows look a bit scratched up too.. I assume they also tried to open the door with a "slim jim" type device. They didn't get inside the car.
The locks are damaged, I can't get the key in there but I can still lock and unlock with the remote. I don't know how compromised they are so I'm especially weary of where I park the car for right now.
The police said the guys slammed into one of their security vehicles while trying to escape. When I was at the police substation in the mall, they were trying to contact the juveniles' parents, but they didn't want to come get the kids!
So, it was an interesting day yesterday. I called my insurance company this morning and should get the police report by Wednesday. Now I just need to find a good place to bring the car for repair.
This sucks. In the end, I'll be out my deductible and will be inconvienced for a few days. I could say I'm pissed, and I guess I am, but there's really not much I can do about it. Feeling worse will only make me feel worse, it won't fix anything.
But I guess what happened could have been much worse. I parked out on the end spot with concrete / grass areas to my left and front, so I only had other cars on the right. I think that may have helped security spot these guys in time. They didn't get to finish the job...they didn't get inside the car and didn't manage to actually steal it.
I guess that's it, anything else I can/should be doing? Thanks all for listening. ;-)

that really sucks man... so sorry...
if you have the time, you can always file a suit in small claims court to recoup the damages to your car, but it might be more trouble than its worth

Hopefully your comprehensive deductible is low. Good luck.
Sounds like they didn't do any structural damage.
Nothing pisses me off more than kids who do more $ in damage than they steal. Whether it's because they're incompetent or because they just really want my John Denver CDs.
Some yahoo once tried to break into my 88 Delta 88. This was 1999 or so, so this was no prize car. He/They went after all four doors with a crowbar. No luck. He must have gotten hot, because he took off his 49ers Starter jacket and left it behind. In it was his drivers license.
Moron.
