Audi of America withdraws 180 & 225HP motors for 2002 TT. 115HP 2.0, and 90HP diesel only.
In a statement yesterday to the European motoring press, Adolf E. Neumann, Audi's Director Inventory Planning (South Hungary International Territory) outlined Audi's new TT engine options for the 2002 model year.
"The 180HP & 225HP 1.8 litre turbo engines currently installed in the Audi TT are to be withdrawn, and will be replaced with the 2.0 litre naturally aspirated 115HP 4-cylinder and the 90Hp 1.9 turbo diesel.
We at Audi are very serious people. It has come to our attention that TT drivers, particularly in the US and Canada, are having far too much fun with our vehicles. Consequently we have reassessed the engine options for the 2002 model year, and are substituting the tried and tested units from the VW New Beetle.
These power plants seem quite adequate for VW drivers, so we see no reason to continue to produce the excessively exciting turbo engines for the TT.
And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the TTS, we will indeed be releasing this model for the 2003 model year. It will be powered by a brand new 3-cylinder 1.0 liter engine running on methanol, which will develop 35HP and produce 0-40 times of under one minute. 0-60 figures are naturally not relevant, since it won't go that fast. TTS of course designates TT "Slow".
As Audi's Director Inventory Planning (South Hungary International Territory) aka DIP****, I feel that these changes further emphasise our position as builders of serious cars."

I'd love a TDI TT! I miss getting 55 mpg...
The best I could do with my A4 2.8Q was combined 27 mpg. With the 180 TT, I get a little over 30 mpg over a tank. Nothing like a TDI for mileage - never got under 50 mpg and often over 55 and more than 700 miles on a tank of fuel with the new bug.
