i may just go take a reading only to see if the data is correct....my car was built in may 00....so it may be an exception....
Still risky with a 600$+ cluster tho...

I've done them before on VWs and its exactly the same thing.. When I was looking for the soft coding for the TT I was swapping ECUs on steve gave me the chart on how to do the cluster instead of the ECU...
The bentely manual should have the full walk through. The only difficult part is setting the mileage as it has it be done in KM not miles.. so its usually best to code the cluster as say a canadian car before you remove the hold one.. write down the KM.. then when you put the new one in enter the KM.. its just a login and adaptation channel..

Especially with VAG COM its easier then the dealer tools.. VAG com when setting the miles ask you to confirm before it saves.. The dealer tool it just saves after you put it in, no asking for confirmation.. Other then setting the miles its very very simple.. the only reason it can make you nevervous setting the miles is because once its in its in.. but you gotta be a real idiot to mess up (and I"ve seen people mess up... they were idiots)
