A CAR made by Korean giant Daewoo has been branded the worst when it comes
to stopping in an emergency.
In a survey of 50 top-selling cars in Britain, the pounds 7295 Daewoo Matiz
took more than 75 feet to come to a halt from just 40 miles per hour.
It was nearly 25 feet more than the best car in the top of the stops test,
the Audi TT.
Cars' braking distances were measured in a week of gruelling safety tests at
the Transport Research Laboratory in Crowthorne, Berkshire. Braking was measured
on dry and wet roads using sophisticated radar equipment to find the distance
required for each car to stop from 40mph in tests organised by Auto Express
magazine.
Bottom of the braking league came the Daewoo Matiz 800 SE, whose braking
distance deteriorated badly with prolonged use.
According to the experts, the brakes faded and then the rear wheels started
to lock before the front ones.
In wet conditions the results were even worse, the Matiz needing the best
part of 30 feet more than a VW Polo, the leader in its super-mini class. The
Matix emerged not only bottom of the super-minis, but last in the entire
assessment.
Daewoo said ABS did not come as standard on the Matiz, but could be fitted
for an extra pounds 395.
Second worst for braking was the pounds 12,725 Peugeot 206 DT HDI which took
73.1 feet to stop from 40mph, nearly 12 feet more than a similar test last year.
Auto Express said the car had a very light brake pedal "combined with brakes
that locked up too easily, making the driver's job of providing brake pressure
difficult."
Third worst in the test was the pounds 7450 Vauxhall Agila 1.2 16v which
took 66.9 feet to make a successful emergency stop from 40mph.
Testers remarked: "The new Vauxhall fared the worst among the vehicles
equipped with anti-locking brakes.
"The braking system generally felt crude and unrefined - a far cry from the
civilised systems most cars in this group have."
In contrast, the pounds 29,000 Audi TT took 51.4 feet to come to a stop,
with experts describing its braking as "impeccable".
Auto Express said: "When subjected to repeated heavy braking, the Audi
slowed quickly and safely. A superb performance.
"According to the Highway Code, a car should travel from 70mph to 0mph in 75
feet. The Audi knocked nearly 20 feet off that figure." Second best of the 50
cars tested was the pounds 62,840 Mercedes E55 which took 52 feet to come to a
halt from 40mph.
Auto Express said: "You get what you pay for. At nearly pounds 63,000, we
would have been upset if this Mercedes had not performed well.
"The car braked quicker than a Porsche after both had been repeatedly braked
in the wet and dry."
Third best was the pounds 23,000 Lexus IS200 which took 53 feet to stop,
with deceleration dubbed "fantastic", while the pounds 18,495 Toyota MR2 was in
fourth position coming to an emergency stop in less than 54 feet.
Auto Express said: "It's often difficult to estimate how well - or badly -
your car will perform in an emergency ... until it's too late.
"We found the difference between the best and the worst was shocking.
"Our results show that a big-selling car without anti-locking brakes is at a
huge disadvantage."
The research also found that people carriers popular with families were low
down the braking chart.
While the Nissan Tino could brake from 40mph to 0mph in 56 feet, the Renault
Scenic could only do it 62.1 feet.
Big off-road vehicles had mixed results when it came to stopping in an
emergency.
The Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee came top of the 4x4 list at 56.1 feet,
while the Toyota Land Cruiser came bottom at 66.8 feet, a difference of more
than 12 feet.

was him! And they said they tested repeatedly which means the stock setup held up against fade.

I hit the red warning light button on the dash. Sounds crazy, but it really gets people's attention behind you and gets them to slow up much more quickly than they would otherwise. It's become a habit for me now; don't even think about it. As soon as I see they've acknowledged and are slowing down, I pop it off.
