My service writer informed me months ago Castrol was used and a Castrol synthetic blend was the factory fill for break-in oil. BMW synthetic also seems to be produced by Castrol and is what I am currently using in 5w x 30.
A lot of heresay discussion. Here at least is a document lending some credibility to my service writer, his dealings with BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar+
Remember the latest fills from the factory are synthetics while a few years ago piston rings and the like needed to be scuffed in first before using synthetics. I'm assuming my TT used a synthetic blend as factory fill.

http://www.bp.com/company_overview/technology/frontiers/fr03apr02/fr03lubricants.asp</a
