I ran 10k change intervals with my New Beetle for 67k miles and several oil analyses showed the oil in good condition after the 10k intervals. I used synthetic 5w40 to be safe, but VW warrantied their drivetrains for 100k with regular dino oil & 10k intervals so it may be Ok. While most enthusiasts tend to vote for shorter intervals, Mercedes SAE papers (I forget the URL) support longer drain intervals, so it's not that simple of an issue.

I just bought an '01 TTQC-180 (w/only 8.5k miles on the clock) and have to make this same decision myself...
