Default Battery Replacement Advice

Dear Fellow TTers,

Has anyone replaced the battery in their TT? Last Saturday I discovered that the battery in my TT was dead, I guess that I should drive the car more than once or twice a month :-(
I looked through my owner's manual but have not found any information on jump starting the car. I am not willing to experiment but have instead decided to replace the battery. I contacted the local dealership but the biggest problem is getting the car out the bowels of my parking garage. The towing company I contacted is not happy about the prospects of towing the car out basement and around a couple of structural columns. Therefore, the best option is for me to replace the battery myself.

I have the following questions about the battery replacement. After removing the battery cover I discovered a terminal block with many cables, it appears that the terminal block is mounted on a bracket that pivots out of the way. Must I disconnect any of the connectors?

Is there any order in disconnecting and reconnecting the battery cables? I think that this is a serious question based on the number of computers/CAN system in the car. I do not know how sensitive the electrical system is to stray electrical discharges, and the order of the cable connection could have a material impact on these components.

Finally, the last time I drove the car I noticed that the radio/CD display in the IP functioned sporadically. I also found posts noting that the problem disappeared once the battery was replaced. Could this display be a de facto voltage meter?

Thank you for your assistance,

John J. Szobocsan

Default No, don't disconnect the connectors. You can unclip this, and move it outta the way....

Yes! there is a definite way to disconnect or re-connect a car battery!

Dis-connect the 'negative' post first!
even with a dead battery, there is some voltage left.
If you use a wrench, and happen to touch metal while working the nut, you will not create a spark.
If you try this on the 'positive' terminal, you run the potential of a nasty short, or exploding battery.
There is enuf current in the battery to *weld* the wrench to the metal being struck.
When you re-install the battery, do the 'positve' terminal FIRST.

Default Jump it!

I've jump-started my TT a few times, and haven't had any problems.

Jump start instructions are same as with any other car:

1) Shut off all accessories (radio, heater, etc.) in both vehicles.
2) Open hood of both vehicles.
3) Both engines should be off.
4) Remove covers as necessary to gain access to batteries of both cars.
5) Attach one end of red cable to positive (+) terminal of dead car's battery.
6) Attach other end of red cable to positive (+) terminal of the live car's battery
7) Attach one end of black cable to negative (-) terminal of dead car's battery
8) Attach other end of black cable to some non-moving grounded point on the engine block of the live car. I usually use the alternator mounting point. IMPORTANT: When jump starting NEVER attach the last connection directly to the battery. Doing so could cause a spark, leading to an explosion!
9) Start the live vehicle. If possible, have someone sit in the source vehicle and rev the engine slightly.
10) Start the dead vehicle.
11) Remove the jumper cables in the reverse order of that shown above.

Is that DieHard OK for both Roadster and Coupe? I only the OEM battery would fit...

I stand corrected. Can't seem to find the reference. Maybe I was thinking about our Allroad...

Default Batteries are different between TTR and TTC

The parts department at the local Audi dealer lists different parts numbers for the roadster and coupe batteries. I do not know how they are different. I thought about Sears as a source of the replacement battery but 1) I could not verify if a "true" replacement exists for a 2000 TT and 2) the website was less than useful in telling me which Auto Center had the replacement battery. The Audi dealer is charging, no pun, $115 versus $99 plus trade-in at Sears. The dealer is less than 1 mile from my office versus a Sears located in some of the rougher areas of Chicago. I understand the sequencing order from before but I wanted to know if anything, namely an cable from the terminal block, needed to be removed.

Thank you.

John

That's absurd. Can't see why/understand the diff.
