best radar detector

Falsing in the city is virtually non-existant. On the highway, the alerts that I've seen have always resulted in a visual, sometimes as far as a couple of miles but usually fairly close (1/2-3/4 mile), but in plenty of time to react.
I purchased a direct wire cable ($2.50) and ran it under the headliner, down the a-pillar, around the corner of the dash, and into the fuse panel. I used a Radio Shack fuse tap gizmo to hook (pak of 6 or so for around a $buck) into a switched circuit. I leave about 8" of free cable under the center sun-visor when the unit is stored.
I have found that in order for any detector to work properly, you must turn it on or be subject to a ticket when driving 63 in a 45 zone. Oops! ;-(
