Bilsteins raising the ride height (question)

Ok, so I've installed my own shocks before to make me just a notch above a newb.
What I can't understand is how a fluid damper can raise the car when the piston position adapts to the whatever height the springs determine.
Something about the "perch", which I don't quite get either.
I've got the Neuspeed-oem version of the yellow Bilsteins which has some different perch position I'm told.

Neither Stock shocks nor Koni's are. They exert a bit of pressure on the damper rod forcing a very slight increase in ride height.
Perch adjustments on Coil-over types just alter the spring pre-load and consequently the height.
