I'm torn between the Lake Silver metallic and one of the blacks (Raven or Brilliant). When I put my name on the waiting list, I spec'd the silver because I've heard black is hard to keep clean - can anyone confirm/refute this? I've heard that the metallic finish of the Raven Black is a little easier to keep un-dusty, but still a pain.

I really like the TT in black and would go for it, except for the hassle. (My current car's black, and it starts to look dirty only a few days after a wash.)

I've got a brilliant black TT and it is hard to keep clean. After a wash it only looks clean for about 1 week. Despite the effort, it is still my favorite color.

I got a FWD Br. Black and love it. I usually wash it every weekend in a carwash I trust. I don't mind it looking more dirty than a silver TT after a rainy week or a rally with friends. It looks more rugged... Besides, even after two - sunny - weeks without carwash my TT still looks sharp and people give it thumbs up. Anyway, too many silver TTs out there. Black will make your car even more unique.

When people ask how often to clean their car, i always ask them how often they clean their shoes. i spent some time in car valet business.

Black looks best under lights at night and in dull daytime conditions as bright sun draws eyes to swirls and blemishes.

Silver never gives same depth of shine as black but is all round more resistant to showing dirt and marking.

It looks best under bright sunlight and dull daytime(UK winter)light.

Preference is a separate thing. These imho are practicalities.

..if you use rubbing circular pressure with sponge/ chamois to wash/dry; then you will see swirls after one month. Most people do this as it is instinctive. Same goes for waxing; use no applied pressure and lay off in straight lines. These catch light less, minimising swirl. Use a wax lightly applied with no cut in it and on a damp cotton cloth.

Trouble is that Audi pdi folks are generally not so fussy when it comes to dewaxing, intial wash and road wax - resulting in the majority of base balck cars leaving the dealer with a certian amount of swirls as a no cost extra!

I have yet to see a mechanical wash that does not ruin black paint.

Yep, it's a second career keeping the black in mint condition, appearance wise. Been at it since November, and haven't really discovered any shortcuts, other than a daily wipe down regimen with Meguiar's Quik Detailer. Since using it I have been able to go two weeks or so without washing, and haven't had to wax it yet. I'd post a pic, but I gotta go wipe down the FyrBolt.
