Brake lights stay on....

Brake lights stay on....
A few days after installing my headunit / amp in my 2001 audi tt something wierd happened. I came back to my car in the parking lot from eating and I noticed my rear lights were on. I checked it out and my lights were off. It turns off my brake lights stay on no matter what, they do not respond to the brake pedal anymore. They stay on if the car is on or off. I disconnected my new head unit and power wire for amp and they still stay on.
I took off the driver side dash panel and removed the button under the brake pedal ( the one that controls the lights). If i push it in and out the lights just stay on. If i disconnect it that is the only way they go off. Do you guys think it is coincidence that this little part went bad after stereo install? Or did the install maybe cause it within a few days. Any ideas?
