turned out the brake light switch was bad and the dealer had to replace it.
However, when I got my car back, the brake lights would only turn on when I pressed VERY hard on the brake pedal, so I had to ajust it myself - it was fairly easy with the explanations from the eBahn CD I had purchased:

Item #4 above is what you're looking for, it's clipped in just behind the brake switch and has a pin sticking out of it that is held by the brake pedal. When you press the pedal, it pushes the pin into the switch..
I also had some help from this thread on how to adjust the actual pin on the brake light switch.
Good luck!

It's under the brake pedal, near the top I believe. I also had the problem where they wouldn't go off. I don't know how long it takes to change because I had it done under warranty - I think they have to take part of the dash off, though.

If you twist it too hard, you'll break it. Not enough, and it won't fully engage. I broke the first one I installed.
You basically remove the lower dash (5 or so torx screws) then find the cable running to the top of your brake pedal. Unplug cable. Twist switch 45 deg left. Remove. Reverse.
Be sure to apply just enough torque to fully seat the switch.
The instructions recommend some obscure grease on the tip of the contact rod. I used WD-40.
When you buy the switch (get it at a VW dealer) they should give you a technical bulletin that explains the procedure.
It should take about 1/2 an hour.

VW did a recall for these switches in NB's, Golfs & Jettas. Even if you're out of warranty, I'd ask Audi to replace it for free. Given it'a an obvious safety issue and VW did a recall for all of its A4-platform cars, they'd be stupid to deny it.
Good luck.
Good luck.
