Default Any discussion on the "R" variant versus the "E" variant?

I've seen the R advertised a good bit, but right along side the E, and wou;dn't know squat to distinguish them.

Default Ted--- I put 4 new "E"s in yesterday. I thought that was the latest version.

Now I have 4 spares to take to Daytona. I'll probably give a couple of them to Chris Smith. I owe him for his help at Barber.

Interestingly there had been some discussion at Barber that perhaps I had blown 2 coilpacks because my plugs were 25000 miles old and maybe the gap was too wide. I changed plugs last night too and the old ones were near perfect. no visible wear , nice and white , gaps were out to about .035 . Maybe it was the boost????? All I know for sure is that I blew 2 in one morning, then turned the boost down a bit on my boost machine and all went well after that.

Default when running hard, i would pull plugs>>>

to check gaps every 10k or a bit less depending on how hard you run....

Very possible that with the gaps that open, the coilpack fubared itself...IMO....

As squirrelly as the TT is electrically, i believe the coilpack and plug need to be close to perfect harmony in wear especially in a modified car.....

My recent run at the Dragon, my car showed a pretty good stumble at the end of the day.....i was hard on it all day, and the plugs have about 12k on them now.....I will be pulling to check gaps shortly, but i would be willing to be that was my problem....

Consider it an ounce of prevention prior to the event...

Default That theory doesn't hold much water to an engineer like me. Sounds like

alchemy.

Boost shouldn't affect electricity. The C/P is a charge device, converting/transforming electricity from V/A to V/A. Such a conversion is unaffected by external forces such as pressure in the cylinder chamber. Now, if the packs were directly exposed, I might feel differently.

If the evidence is circumstantial (it happens under hard boost) then something else is toasting the C/P, and it has to be related to electricity.

RE: the "R" variant C/P: I see them adverstised as the latest

HERE!

Default Thanks. Fixed your link, I don't know about the boost - coilpack correlation. Just quoting Chris S.

Default i see your point...although the coilpack itself can't deliver the charge under WOT, then

why not be coilpack related? twas with my case. change to the latest revision and its been a few years now without any issues.

Default This may not apply but >>>

When my plug gap gets that wide I get misfires at high boost. I think what is happening is either the spark is getting blown out by the high boost or the wide gap is creating enough resistance so the coil packs can't deliver an efficient spark (regapping the plugs fixed all problems). I would think if any coil packs were on their way out then this would be more likely to happen.

Default Excessive Gap= misfires when the C/P cannot develop sufficient potential to flash the gap.

But that is either an inherent design problem (not enough of a transform) and they've "juiced" the newer C/P sets (Audi wouldn't marginally design the C/P would they!), or just fundamental physics on the dielectric properties of the A/F mixutre when the C/P applied the voltage.

Science rules.
