I've been using Mobil1 5W-30 and ...
I've had to top up about 2L after 7000km (about 6months). I'm going to try Mobil1 0W-40 for my next oil change to see if that improves the oil consumption.

I stopped using Mobil 1 on both my K04'd Jetta and TT-->
In MY personal experience on 1.8T's and facing the particular driving/climatic conditions I face, I found that switching from Mobil 1 (never used lower than 10w-30) dropped the oil consumption noticeably.
Amsoil 10w-30 "turbo formulated" series is what I've been using... no oil added between 4000mi changes. I also had less consumption than Mobil using Valvoline synth in 1.8T's.
I'd recommend trying different brands to see if there is improvement for you because some have higher volatility (higher is worse) and that might be the problem.
