Default Re: Has the 50k maintenace been done yet?

Thanks for all the great advice! Now I have more questions, though:

What's involved with the 50K maintenance? How much does it cost at the dealership?

Where to buy Bilsteins?

How hard to replace the timing belt? My husband has built a few pretty fast hot-rods and is retoring a '41 Buick right now, so he's pretty good with a wrench. Is this a do-it-at-home job for a talented but first-time Audi mechanic?

What is DV replacement? Is DV and MAF replacement a recall item?

We did a CarFax on the car and there's no record of any major problems or accidents.

Harwood Performance Engineering--husband's stuff

Default Should have been 20, and 40K maint. Major @40K is Haldex oil, brake fluid flush...

You would have to be a pretty well seasoned Audi person to tackle a timing belt change on this car.
I'm not sure it can be done that easily withoput a lift.
I know some will disagree, but I've seen mine done, and it's not pretty. I feel confident with a lot of this type of self-maintainence, but I don't think I would tackle this alone.

MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor has extended warrany now by Audi, because of many failures. It's expensive, ~$300 t oreplce, if you buy the Audi part, cheaper if you get a comparable VW part.

DV (Diverter Valve) has been a constant annoyance to some since day One. you will need a trained ear to detect if it's bad, and some amount of experiencve driving the turbo TT to tell if it may be bad.

Bilstiens @ shox.com Ask for the 'TT Forum' discount

Bilstein Installl in my Garage last April

Default 50k mile service is mostly minor stuff, but....

if it hasn't had it done yet that is also the end of the audi advantage warranty. Meaning if there are any issues with the car when you buy it, and it hasn't had the 50k service done, you should be able to get them taken care of for free as part of the normal warranty.

Default you sure? Up here

if its over the mileage they wont do the service for free even if you still have one left under the 80K Km or 4 year plan.

Default Well, the original post said "about 50k miles" It did not specify which side of 50k

If it's under 50k and hasn't had the 50k service done then yes, it should be done for free. If it is over 50k, over 4yrs or the 50k service was already done, then no, it won't be a freebie.

Default I've got a 2001TTR and I just love it.I got Bilsteins and springs right away

I or should I say we all know about the life of the OEM Monroe shocks. It's been 32 months now and not one problem with my car.
Give us a color and interior match or better yet a picture.

Default If hubby has replaced engines

he can do the timing belt. It's not pretty, but mostly because of the amount of junk that has to be removed to get to it...

If you're serious about home maintenance , then get the shop manual (see link) and even though stuff will be complicated or time consuming, it should be less scary. That said, getting a VAG-COM for your PC is high on the list of important home-schooling for the TT

I have both and some decent tools, but I still won't do the timing belt myself.. though brakes, haldex and lots of other smaller stuff doesn't scare me. It also helps that I know a good audi/vw shop that has done zillions of VW/Audi timing belts...

Good luck, it's a fun car but it does want some care and feeding...

Bentley Online Manual
