Can a faulty instrument cluster cause a CEL? TIA!
Hi, I brought my car in to service due to a CEL and the dealer told me the code they pulled said that there was a problem with the coolant system. They pulled the entire system apart and tested everything, but couldn't find the problem. Now they say I need a new cluster. I thought it's the ECU that determines what fault codes I get and the cluster simply displays the CEL when told to. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I think you're a guinea pig...>
for some techs that don't know what they're doing. The only thing connected electrcally to the cooling system is a $6 temp sensor which is known to fail, a fan switch in the radiator and a level sensor in the $20 coolant bottle. If they're doing this under warranty, let em run with it. At least you'll get a new cluster out of it..If you're paying, run away.

lol... it's under warranty, but I just don't want this to be a total waste of time...
and I have to drive with a CEL on for over 2 weeks because that's how long it'll take to order in a new cluster. Also, I'm just about to get the APR chip on a group buy at RPI on the 9th. Should I still do this or back off on chipping until the cluster is replaced?

i think you should ...
wait after they change your car before you do anything else to it..such as adding the chip. dealer are known to be "evil" when it comes to warranty...anything looks out of the ordinary will ruin your warranty then you'll get stuck with this noob tech playing with your car. anyone else agree or disagree?
