I'm currently running a 245/40/17 Pilot Sport on a 7.5" rim. I want to run a 255/40/17 Kumho Victoracer on my track wheels. Do you think it will work?

I could sure use that extra 30mm in the back
Would it hurt anything to try it? Is the worst thing that could happen would be rubbing?

not all tires have the same section width (for example, Kumho's tires range from 8.9" to 9.2" (depending on the model).
So, a bigger cross section width might make it more difficult to install the tire on a 7.5" wheel.

you could do some serious damage to you car that way, quite apart from the fact that it could cause a serious RTA...

most tire manufacturers have the acceptable rim widths for each tire on their web sites.
As far as the things that could go wrong...especeially in AX or track conditions, the tire could pop off the rim?

Tires are designed to work on a particular rim. You have a certain amount of lattitude but as Steve said the 245's look to be the recomended max performance wise.

http://michelinman.com/assets/pdfs/doc_pilotsportcup.pdf</a
