Further documentation of FWD tranny problems...

Here's the most up to date list of FWD TT transmission problems. There was a period of time where I was not documenting the problem, so I believe that I could now add a number of additional names to this list.

Don't compare these numbers to the total number of TTs sold, but rather to TT.Org forum participants. Another reason for this is that some here seem to think that my tranny problem was just isolated bad luck. I think that it is something more. Also, be aware that our sister site, VW Vortex, has also documented about 50 cases of the identical 2nd gear synchro grinding problem. This FWD tranny is also used in other VW products. Anyway, here's a partial documentation of some of these problems.

1. MattC 6-25-99. 2nd gear synchro problems. Transmission replaced.

2. Brad Willis 7-24-99. 2nd gear synchro problems. Transmission replaced.

3. Brad Willis 8-7-99. 2nd gear synchro AGAIN. Appears transmission will have to be replaced for a second time.

4. Kurt 6-25-99. 2nd gear synchro problem. Transmission replaced.

5. Sai 6-25-99. Said that his dealer replaced the tranny of a non forum member.

6. Sai 7-26-99. He is now experiencing transmission problems. Tranny "clanks" when shifting into 2nd gear (probable 2nd gear syncro problem).

7. Hal 6-15-99. Problems getting transmission into 2 gears.

8. Jay 6-14-99. 1st and 2nd gear problems requiring multiple attempts to engage transmission.

9. Steve Mikula Service Manager of Don McGill Audi. 2 non-forum member TTs in at the same time getting transmission replaced.

10. TToby 6-25-99. Said his friend is an Audi mechanic who had already replaced "several" TT transmissions. TToby then searched local dealerships for a TT demo to drive. He found one, but the dealer said., "you can sit in it, but that's it, because the transmission's broken."

11. DaveO 6-15-99. Lost 3rd gear. New transmission

12. Jeffrey Sessler 6-15-99. Reported difficulty engaging 1st gear from a dead stop.

13. BillK 7-25-99. 2nd gear synchro grinding (I think his transmission was replaced later).

17. Kurt Alexander 6-14-99. New transmission.

18. EnVenice 7-24-99. Rented a TT at a rental agency. They said that it was in the shop for the 1st month getting the transmission replaced.

19. Ari Jay Comet 8-8-99. Transmission failing due to 2nd gear synchro problems.

20. MNE 8-7-99. Transmission failing. Dealer says replacement is inevitable.

Is this problem limited to 5 spd FWD? Has it been reported in the Quattro 180 5 spd?
Are there any similar complaints in the new 6 spd?
Thanks for your input.

Default FWD only. Not everyone has this, but many have. The Q was made for the TT, FWD is a VW tranny.

Default Thanks for your response, Brad.....more....

Although I am very close to my waiting list spot
for a TTQ225 coupe or TTRQ, I wonder if it might be wise to wait for the 2002 model year for 'bug control'.
I have driven the 180 TTR and liked it, but here in Oregon topless time is limited.
The A pillar, and dashboard shook quite violently during my very thorough test drive on some of the 'washboard' desert blacktop.
I really want a White Pearlescent TT and hope for
2002 release of this color.

Default While some have experienced tranny problems, it is not as wide spread as some make it out to be.

It is my belief that there has been a lot of hypochondria going around with regards to the fwd tranny. (Lyme disease? Yeah, I have those symptons!)

Default Much of the input has been spectulation, here is my take...

As an 180 FWD owner of 10 months and 5,000 miles. I have not experienced any grinding or "notchyness" in my tranny. Some other owners obviously had problems, which has been well and consistently documented in this forum. I don't believe it is an inherent design flaw, but rather an inventory/quality assurance issue, that was most prominent at the early stages of production in Gyor, Hungry. It would be interesting to see if the problem continues to exist for the FWD's with higher vin numbers.

Default Let me add my name to the list...

So far the grinding is rare - only on rapid upshifts at 6K+ rpm, and then not all the time. Since I've been chipped, I rarely rev it there now. The dealer knows of the problem (they duplicated it on a test drive). It's not a frequent enough problem to warrent replacing the transmission yet, but I realize it might be inevitable. I have an extended warrenty, so I'll wait and see. I have an early production TT (built 4/99). I otherwise like the tranny and love the car...

Default With all respect to tks, Brett, et al...

This problem has occurred over and over and over. Let's face the facts folks, this isn't hypocondria or a coincidence, and it shocks me that this isn't quite obvious.

I think that there can be a tendency to feel that if you own a FWD and haven't experienced the problem firsthand, then it must not exist. Why are all of these folks owning both VWs and FWD TTs having a virtually identical problem? Mass hysteria? Doubtful, in my view.

Who's to say that the problems are early production and now resolved? We're still getting new reports in almost every time the topic is discussed, including today. And for those who might challenge this, what possible benefit is there for you? If you are a FWD owner, and there even might be a problem, wouldn't you like some heat put on VW/Audi so that they resolve the problem? Or do you want to go through the crap and multiple transmission replacements, and denial by Audi that I went through for months on end?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there IS a problem here folks. I don't own a FWD anymore, but I'm going to continue to aggressively address this situation for you folks who own these lousy FWD transmissions, and hopefully there will be some future solution.

Here's a link to the VW survey regarding 2nd gear synchro grinding in the identical tranny, but in VW products:
