Default Can't wait to get low on gas...

Here in CA, about the highest octane premium is 91. So I stopped by the local auto parts store and noticed that they had a couple of octane boosters on display.

Made by NoS, one bottle was for "street use" and claimed to boost octane by 3 points. The other was a bit more expensive ($7.99) and was for "off road use". Supposedly, it treats 16 gallons and boosts octane by 7 points, which should make a difference for my octane-starved programming.

I have to wait until the tank is empty before using it just prior to fill-up, but it will be interesting to see if this stuff makes much of a difference.

I'm pretty sure that GuilTTy has a rapid method of emptying your gas tank...ask him for details. :

I'm quite familiar with Joel's technique. Think I'll use an alternate method!

You can put it in whenever you want. It doesn't have to be low. It's actually more potent with less.

Default You rate octane differently, that's why

In Europe, the number on the pump is the RON (Research Octane Number). In the US, commercial pumps display the rating based on an average of a given sample of gasoline's research and motor (a lower number) otane ratings. Referred to as the R+M/2 method, as opposed to RON, which is on the European tanks. So the difference isn't that great, European gas is normally only slightly higher grade. I believe that 98 RON works out to be about 94 R+M/2,(which you can get at least some places in the US - NY I think) and the highest grade we can get here in Germany, 99 RON which is also in an ultra-low sulfur format, would be about 95 R+M/2. Probably get to the US before too long, I would guess.

Default Not sure what you've read but...

The "off-road use" booster claims to raise the octane level by 7 points. Our "premium" fuel here in CA is only 91 points. So if it raises it anywhere near 7 points, I'm thinking it will be a noticable difference. We'll see. BTW, this stuff runs around $8, so I'll do my best to determine whether or not it's worth the expense.
