Jim Hall and Troy Rogers had 4 restored Chaparrals at Road America for the Brian Redman International Challenge. Jim drove.
Pete Lyons byline, of course.
Those cars still thrill me to the core.
BTW, doesn't Jim Hall look like Clint Eastwood now?

Saw them run every year in the Can Am . .
at Laguna Seca - including the "sucker" car w/ two engines (small motor running the vacuum!)
Jim Hall had a good vision of what was needed and a "different" (not ground effects, a vacuum cleaner!) view of how to achieve it. That car was insanely fast in the sweepers - just unbelievable!
(and using a 2 speed slush box!!!)

GM played with "suckers" 3 or more years before the 2J.
At least two car divisions built street cars with "suckers" to test the concept.
With over 5000 square inches of sucker area (I believe), a few HUNDRETHS of a Bar vacuum could generate a ton (literally) of downforce.
FWIW; the "automatics" weren't automatic. They were fairly conventional manual gearboxes (1(!), 2 and 3 speed) with a torque converter in place of the clutch. Interestingly, as the engine power went up, so did the number of forward speeds...because the tires (traction) were growing faster than the power! 2J had a 3-speed, I believe.
