Default check engine light

Have a 2000 TT 180hp quattro that has a check engine light on, code states "engine is running lean, check for vacuum leak", could not find leak anywhere. Mechanic suspects a faulty mass air flow meter. Anybody out there have or had the same problem. The car only has 44k miles.

yeah,I had my check engine light on around 52k miles due to "code 17536 system is too lean". I just replaced an Air mixture sensor.

the bottom is the housing. There are two torx screws. They can be taken out w/ a pliers if you don't have the appropriate tool. The top part w/ wires attached is a push & unclip deal. You can order the VW MAF housing & sensor for less $ at Impex Foreign auto parts. It's an easy install.
