Default This bag featured prominently on Sex and the City a few weeks ago.

Hence the popularity.

Default This is actually cheap for a Birkin bag.

My firm is outside counsel for Hermes and in June I was in Manhattan on trial for them against knockoff makers.

Birkins start at about $8000 new and the waiting list is -- no kidding -- five years and so long in fact that you can't even get put on the list. Crocodile versions of the Kelly or Birkin can go for $20K+.

Neat note: the Birkin was designed in 1984 by then-CEO Jean Louis Dumas. He was on an airplane with French actress Jane Birkin who had just had a child. She was having difficulty schlepping all her baby gear around in her bag. Jean-Louis and she figured out a new design, large and capacious but with a low center of gravity and convenient handles, together with the classic Hermes horizontal strap locking design, and voila -- a new bag obviously now named after Jane Birkin.

I know, a guy really shouldn't know this much about purses, but women dig talking about this stuff at bars.
