Chip question: replacing vs. reprogramming

Why are the chip upgrades for the TT only done by replacing the chip, and not reprogramming it? For recent BMW's, you can just download the software right onto the chip without removing it from the car; it takes about 20 seconds.
For BMW's, my understanding was that this can be done for more recent models with OBD-2 compliant chips, while older ones with OBD-1 still need to have them replaced to upgrade them. But of course the TT is OBD-2.

I know while watching the video the Yuppy mentioned something about a data jack located in the car for computer hookups and diagnostics bla bla bla...
I'm sure it can be done. Audi has its own chip now? Where did I hear this? Somewhere on this forum..
Any one have detailed info???

Re-programming a ECU is not simply a matter of hooking up your car via a VAG tool and pressing a button. When you hear of a re-programmed chip, it is a ECU with a new chip in it. The alternative is to buy a second ECU which then allows you to have a stock chip for trips to the dealer, and a Modified ECU with the performance chip for everyday driving...
Price for added chip ~$480. Price for new ECU with Chip ~$1000.
Go to AWE, APR, PES for more info.

BMW has a wonderful relationship with a tuner called Dinan. BMW sells those chips through its dealer network and does not have a problem with owners chipping their cars.
Audi on the other hand has a problem with EVERYONE chipping their cars, except for Audi owners in Europe! In Europe you can purchase and have the dealer install an MTM chip for you and are still covered by your Audi warranty!
Ivan and a few others have seen a letter stating that Audi will begin to sell MTM chips through its dealers, when this happens then you might see the dealers flash the chips to the MTM code. But until that happens the various chip tuners HAVE to replace the chip and install an algorithym chip to prevent this from happening.
I hope this makes sense?

I have a BMW with a Dinan chip upgrade. They DO NOT replace the chip (on OBD-II cars, see my original post). I watched him download the software from a laptop, it took about 20 seconds. I know they do this "flash reprogramming" (I think that's what they call it) for the Jim Conforti chip for BMW's as well.
BMW does not sell Dinan chips through its dealer network. A number of dealers are also Dinan dealers, and Dinan's warranty matches BMW's. But again, for late-model BMW's they don't have to replace the chip, they just download software to it. Does anyone know why that can't be done with the TT?
