I have always used Mobil 1 Formula 5W-50 in my Audi's. It is reccomended that a non-synthetic oil be used for the first 10,000 km's and then replaced with a synthetic oil.
I have also replaced the transmission fluid in my TT with a Mobil 1 Transmission fluid (http://dallnd6.dal.mobil.com/GIS/Mobilpds.nsf/26b7c4b33367a4a086256665004e4266/e8678dd5ac061972ca25676000836a78?OpenDocument).

Talking to the Service Manager last week at a very large Audi dealer in a large Australian city. They are changing to Mobil 0w40 or 5w50 as soon as 2-5000kms for customers.
They are of the opinion that the benefits of removing the gunge far outweigh possible lack of seating of rings, and I tend to agree.
Case in point, my recently sold A4 1.8Tq had synthetic in it from 2000kms right to when it was sold with 58000 kms, first Castrol SLX 0W30 then Mobil 1 5W50. Oil was still changed every 7500 -10000kms, and not a single drop was added between changes.

Graham
TTq due next week

Thanks, that's very helpful. I actually planned to switch to Mobil 1 at about 5000 miles. I'm wondering, though, what to use now, before the first oil change, when the oil needs to be topped off. One possibility is to use what Audi put in originally, but I don't know what that is.

...it's not really going to matter too much what weight you use. I believe the factory fill is something along the lines of a 5w-40, which is pretty tough to find in the US (unless you buy something like Amsoil or Redline). Supposedly, Castrol sells their Syntec in that weight exclusively to VW/Audi dealers. BTW, the Mobil-1 5w-50 mentioned in another post is not available in the US.

I got my dealor (Sydney City Audi) to use Mobil 1 (i supplied the oil) in my old Audi (A4 TQ) at every service. They had no issues with me using Mobil 1.
I took my TT (132KW FWD) for the first service (8000k's) last week and the dealor replaced the oil with Mobil 1. I have driven the TT from Sydney to Adelaide (via Melbourne) and back prior to the service (approx 4000km's inlcuding side trips to Vineyards in Adelaide), ie a perfect running in period :-).

Dealers had no problems with the Mobil 1, Denlo in Parramatta and Chatswood Classic.
I drove my old A4 1.8Tq down from sydney to Melbourne last week and sold it down there. I pick up my silver/black TTq either tomorrow or Monday.
And I have a run to Melbourne at Christmas planned, plus a three day trip into the Victorian high country, then returning to Sydney before NYE. Another perfect run-in period, and then the Mobil 1!!
