Default Chronicles of a Broken Timing Belt...

'01 TTQC with 61,650 miles on it had the left bolt (1) of the camshaft positioning sensor housing fall into the belt 2 weeks ago. The right bolt (2) was finger tight. The bolt took out the crankshaft sprocket. If you look at the water pump, there is only one chip on the plastic impeller, so I probably could have gone longer without changing out the belt.

I'm glad that I didn't change out the belt at 60k b/c I would have never checked the bolts on the housing. Granted, maybe bolt (1) would have just been hanging there and it would have been obvious. Needless to say, if I had gone to the trouble of replacing the belt just to have a loose bolt fall into it two weeks later, I would have been a wee bit upset.

I ended up replacing 2 exhaust and 2 intakes valves. Indie shop knocked it out in a week and car runs very strong--in fact, I think the peak boost is even higher now (25psi) but this could be my imagination. Set me back ~$2350 (after taxes).

Moral of the story...check those bolts!
