Default Colorado Road Trip Planned, need dining and touring recommendations!

Taking a fun road trip thru Colorado with my TTQ and my gal starting July 4th. Itinerary is: Central City to Glenwood Springs via Aspen, Glenwood Springs to Ouray via Grand Junction, Ouray and Durango and thereabouts, Durango to Canon City via Lake City, Canon City to Col. Springs via Phantom Canyon Trail, Cripple Creek, and Gold Camp Road. Col Srings and thereabouts, and finally to Denver and the long drive across the flatlands back to Minnesota. I would appreciate knowing about interesting local resturants along the way and "don't miss" sightseeing opportunities. Thanks. Frank

Default If you can get that way, I would recommend Rocky Mtn National Park (Estes Park).

It seems that your trip is mostly within the bottom half of CO, but I highly recommend going up to Rocky Mtn National Park (closest town is Estes Park) and driving on North America's "highest" highway (11,000'). I was up there just over a year ago and it was awe inspiring... wish I had my TT then! There's year-round glaciers, huge mtns, buffalo, probably can even have a snowball fight on the 4th... it's a nice scene, just be careful when you get out of the car at 10,000'... you definately feel the altitude. It's about 100 miles NW from Denver.

And since you're going through Colorado Springs, you just have to climb Pike's Peak! I've never been there, but it's on my to do list. And if you get west of Denver, try to climb Mt Evans - I think it's even higher than Pikes.

Enjoy! I'm jealous... <p>-= Peter =-

Default The cliffs at Grand Junction should be fabulous TT drive...

As well as in and out of Canon City. Don't miss Great National Sand Dunes near NM border and you might want to try the Pikes Peak drive...in fact, isn't the run on July 4th, still? Have fun...funky restaurant in Colorado Springs is Phantom Valley Brewery according to TTNancy -most recently there.

Default Hot Springs and railroads and avalanche canyons.

Be sure to stop at the Orvis hot spring in Ouray (clothing optional, but much better without in view of the snow covered peaks)

Drive hard from Ouray to Silverton to Durango and watch out for snow, even in July.

Ride the narrow gauge railroad from Durango to Silverton throught the Animas canyon.

Stay at the Strater hotel in Durango (restored Victorian) and lots of great places for dinner in town.

E-mail me if you need details.

Mark
