Default Colorado TTer's: Full Blown Winter Radials (like M2s) or Performance All Season?

Thinking about next Winter, and I am wondering that given the fact that we really don't get that much snow here in the Denver Metro area, do you run total no-nonsense Winter tires or less aggressive all season radials? Just mulling it over...

Default I like my M2's. I mounted them on a 2nd set of rims.

If you're gonna get a 2nd set of rims, may as well get snow tires on them. The M2's aren't really extreme winter tires; they're "Performance" tires for winter....good in the snow and dry (vs great in the snow, crappy on dry). oh yeah, I'm in Ft. Collins....

Default I am going to get a second set of rims...

but still have not decided on 16 or 17 inch. I was just a little concerned about running around most of the time on dry pavement and wearing the M2's out prematurely. Thanks for the feedback.

Default I had these same M2's on a previous A4...

So this is the 3rd season I'm on these, and they haven't worn too much. I went w/ 16's since I the tires and rims were cheaper, and 16's give a little more rim protection than 17's...especially for winter. so my summer's are the stock 17's and winter is 16's. hope that helps.

Default Don't drive the TT in the snow, but on my GTI...

and even on my wife's minivan, I put all out winter tires on with a second set of rims. All-season tires are CRAP!!! (both in winter and summer) IMHO of course.

I have Artic Alpins on my GTI. These are excellent on ice, but not that great in deep snow. I commute in Denver with this car and think these tires are optimum if you don't spend a lot of time in the mountains.

I have Blizzaks (2nd gen. can't recall the number) on the van. These are much better in deep snow and still do very well on ice. If I go into the mountains I take this vehicle with no problems.

Both cars are FWD only.

Call Tire Rack, buy the rims, get them shipped to your door ready to mount. No hassle, and well worth the money.

By the way, both tires listed are as good as studded snows (I used to have these) on ice, and 100 times better than studs on dry pavement!!

Thx for the feedback, it seems dedicated Winter radials are where I am headed when the time comes.

Default Agreed, get dedicated full on winter tires, it's worth it IMO

BTW, do I have you in my listing of Colorado TTer's?

Drop me a line if not, I'm hoping to send out a group mailing for an all TT get together in the next week or so.

Default Got Pirelli P7000 SuperSport all-weathers, love them!

Dedicated winter tires are wonderful, but as a Colorado resident you know that if you go into the mountains at all there is no time of year you can guarantee there won't be snow, and you definitely don't want to get stuck on Trail Ridge Road with your summer tires and snow on the ground just because it was 90 degrees down in Denver...

I can detect absolutely no performance degradation as compared to the stock Potenza 040s in the dry, and obviously they're much better in the snow and ice...
