I spoke with my dealership's (Miramar Audi of San Diego) Service Manager and Assistant Service Manager at the same time. I brought up the subject of the initial break-in, and they both said, almost at the same time, that it is not necessary and not recommended by the factory.
They said that a break-in is necessary on the 4.2 V8 due to the valves needing to be seated (or something like that), but not on other engines. The quote went something like this "The way they build these engines, they way they're tested and the precise tolerances, a break-in is unnecessary. It's ready to go. Take it out and have some fun!"
