Did not tackle this one myself - here's the story: About a year ago, an independent shop replaced my torn driver side outer cv boot with new aftermarket "OEM replacement" kit they ordered. The aftermarket rubber boot turns out to be of a harder compound than the OEM boot and they did not get the boot to seat properly in the groove on the joint. Thus, upon each revolution of the wheel, the boot "rides out" of the groove, letting a bit of grease out. No harm is being done yet except it makes a mess (and I assume eventually the joint would dry up). So, beware of replacement kits - this would be a case where Audi OEM would be my strong suggestion when replacing your CV boots.
Grease creeping out from under the boot:

i've had this happen to my allroad. had both boots changed out with OEM CV boots...leaked grease when warmed up and made a mess everywhere. same goes for my TT...and in this case, the dealer changed them when they did the wheel bearing since it was worn and was recommended to change them out...which i opted for. turns out that it also leaked grease because it wasn't clamped down tight enough...not a case of a replacement CV boot. just a FYI.

aftermarket boot material was too stiff. I would not crush in to the groove like the OEM boot does. That is why it walks out of the groove and splatters. So you are correct, a tighter clamp would fix it, but there is not good way to get it tighter (according to the Tech, and the 2 hours MarTT spent the night before trying to do it himself)...
