I don't know what the parts cost but I replaced a front outer CV boot which basically is the same amount of work as replacing the CV joint because it has to come out. Now that I know what I am doing I think I could do an outer one in less then an hour. It took me much longer then that my first time. I think if you have average mechanical knowledge you can do it yourself. Search the forums, there are instructions and pictures on how to do it. Good luck!

Pretty easy to do, actually. You will need a "triple square" socket to remove the bolts from the trans. It basically looks like a 12-point torx bit.
The CV shaft was only $100. My local import parts store had both the axle and the tool in stock.
