Pryed apart the aluminum crimp rin that hold the glass in place.Unbolted the nipple on the rear of the housing.Removed the needle (I used a piece of thin but stiff plastic with a "V" groove in it to pry it form the pin.Unscrewed the tiny phillips head screws..pulled the face of the clear plastic back/light diffuser(Its just glued on with a contact type adhesive, and sanded the back of the face till the red came off...
Reinstall is reverse of above
I now have a Defi that matches the rest of my guages in terms of illumination

It was trolling through your fotki that gave me the idea
Although nowhere did it indicate that you had successfully removed the red backing...Hell I even went to the trouble of doing a search too ;-)
An OEM needle would be nice...but then I'd need 3 of em

Yea, never did a write up on it, it was actually a spare Defi I had, I was so careful...
not to screw it up, and then I could have killed myself for cleaning it after it was all done. I actually never thought of sanding it off, that's a much better idea. The paint remover gets hot and tends to warp the face. Nice work.

It started out as trying to pry the red from the face using a drywall blade
Scuffed the red off with that, and then had the bright idea to just sand it all off...It worked well...no bright spots on the face.
I put the defi back in due to the RevoTechnica not being smooth in the transition from vac to boost...I thought it may be a kinked vac line...but putting the trusty Defi back in confirmed to me that the RevoTecnica was exactly what I paid for...a $50 gauge
