What excatly is a diverter valve? I keep thinking of a 'waste gate'.
Are they the same?

Throttle bypass valve, relieves pressure to prevent the turbo's compressor from stalling when the throttle is closed. Diverts already metered air back into the intake tract. Vacum operated.
