Does installing XP totally reformat your hard drive? Or does it

to guarantee you don't have any legacy softwares that can muck up your system.
XP will tag the programs that it thinks will no longer work with it and give you a list.
I suggest before you upgrade to also make sure you have lots of memory. XP is bloat code.

I've installed XP Home and Pro on top of win98, winnt , winxp beta and clean
All are running just fine, well as good as XP gets I suppose with the numerous issues outstanding from MS
I let the machines convert FAT32 disks to NTFS during the install process and all was well there too.
I also was told that XP does not support the older legacy AT slot cards but when I had my win2k machine that I upgraded, the 16bit Sound Blaster card came up and was running just fine. So perhaps that is misinformation..
Good luck

it will not support certain legacy hardware from a clean install. But if the device was installed and you did an upgrade then the old drivers will be used and it will not run in its own memory space as in a newer device. I am sure you know what I am talking about.

keep posting all of the time?
You also had a nice head start on me. I didn't join the forum until Oct 1999 and I think my first post was Nov 1999 after I got the car.
