Default Does MAF sensor need that plastic mesh in front of it?

Topic. Seems ... like it doesnt need to be there! O.o

In all seriousness, some have removed it but I doubt the effectivness of doing so.
Sometimes it is best to trust the Audi engineers.

It is placed there to straighten the airflow and give the maf sensor an accurate reading. APR even uses one in their oversized MAF housing used with their stage 3 setup

I just dont understand it really. there would be better ways to do this... wish audi just used MAP sensors
