Does MAF sensor need that plastic mesh in front of it?

It's called a restrictor grid
Placed there to prevent the cars from being too fast.------------------
In all seriousness, some have removed it but I doubt the effectivness of doing so.
Sometimes it is best to trust the Audi engineers.
It is placed there to straighten the airflow and give the maf sensor an accurate reading. APR even uses one in their oversized MAF housing used with their stage 3 setup

I just dont understand it really. there would be better ways to do this... wish audi just used MAP sensors
