does repaired damage from a wreck depreciate the vehicle?

I was listening to the local consumer advocate guy on the radio here, clark howard. He was talking to someone who had been hit and said that the insurance company of the at fault party has to, if told, pay the depreciation of the vehicle due to the wreck. Anyone heard this, or maybe heard the show today? I was recently hit and if the value of my car is going to go down, even though the damage was repaired, I certainly expect to be compensated for this. THanks.

If the nature of the damage was purely cosmetic and there is no residual visibility of that damage, then I believe you're safe.
However, virtually all accident damage leaves some residual visibility, some of which only appears over time, like a small run in the paint, paint fading from thin clearcoat, ripples, etc. That can easily impact the resale value of the vehicle later.
Also, structural damage to the vehicle that requires extensive repairs will almost certainly be detectable by an inspector and will result in a resale value deduction.

Or are you still driving with the 15 or 30 day temp plates?
That really sucks big time. As Jason said, try and get the hatch and ask them to leave off the spoiler.
If they have to replace the lower fascia around the tail pipes for any reason, can I buy it from you?

How it impacts the value will completely depend on the quality of the repair workmanship. If they do a perfect job, no problem.

as for the hatch, I'm split. I'm thinking about trying it without the spoiler but I'm one of the unwashed masses that thinks it looks better with it. I think it gives a nice break to the shape. I'll have to bring it in to the dealer after the repairs to have it done so I'll get to form an owners opinion at that point.
I don't know if I can keep anything they have to replace, do they let you do that? Never had the need for body work so I don't know. If so, I'll certainly grab it and it'll be yours.
