Ignore the last digit (control digit). The six digits before that will give you the production number:
Your TT is Number 10024 ever being produced (consecutive production number - mine is 17400!)

Welthersteller-Schlüssel ein Audi, montiert in Ungarn eine sonstige Audi-spezifische Kennung wäre "WRV", bei Volkswagen würde hier z.B. "WVG" stehen;
"W" für komplette Werksfertigung;
"T" für Teile-Montage (der TT wird in Ungarn ja mit angelieferten Teilen nur zusammenmontiert)

Füllziffern "Z" dient immer als Füllziffer, da die Fz-ID-Nr. weltweit mit einer einheitlichen Länge festgelegt ist;
hier werden besondere Abgasvorschriften codiert,
die von den deutschen abweichen;

Modell-Schlüssel TT "8D" wäre ein A4; "8L" ein A3

fortlaufende Nr. innerhalb der Produktion der 12.072ste TT, der im Modelljahr 1999 produziert wurde diese sechs-stellige Produktionsnummer beginnt bei jedem neuen Produktionsjahr wieder bei 000001

You dont say if you already own a TT or if you are awaiting delivery of one (your question regarding "placement on boat").
However, it seems to me your VIN number tells the following: first digit "1" (character 11 in the VIN number)says that your AUDI is produced at the Gyor plant(hence a TT). Second to seventh digit "000248" (character 12 to 17 in the VIN number) say that your car is no. 248 produced, not "ever produced" as Uwe states, but rather the no. produced in a given model year. You have to look at character 10 in the VIN number. X means 1999, Y:2000 and Z:2001. (if you have an X, it will mean, (Uwe), that it is no. 248 ever built. Check out that character no. 10. If you are awaiting delivery, I guess yours is a model 2001.
btw, mine is X 005507: #5507 mod.year 1999
