Unemployment is up? Nonsense. My anecdotal experience is that ...
... during the recession a lot of 2 income families learned to live on 1 income, and decided that they prefer it that way.
There certainly appears to be more anxiety in the work force, but unemployment is very low. Unless you're an uneducated ex-convict, and then no politician is going to be able to help you.
