Default ECS Stainless Brake Line Install

Got the ECS parts installed today over at MarTT's. The hardest part was figuring out what the heck all the parts were for, and how to use them. I was 1/2 way through a post here to ask how to install when I had my AH HA moment, and figured it all out. So, I went back to the grind and finished the install correctly (after a quick trip out for more brake fluid!).

The rear lines are VERY short. I sure don't understand why Audi didn't make them stainless braided to start with. The section after the part that gets replaced is braided...

Kit Contents:

The bag of parts on the bottom right were the cause for concern. I figured out how to use the spring clips easy enough, but was baffled on the brass washers. Finally figured out they were for the front caliper lines.

So, here is a shot of a rear line installed:

And here is a front line installed:

And finally a shot of the line though the wheel:

It would probably take me less than 2 hours to do again. It was more like 4-5 today with several breaks, trips to the store, and lunch interrupting.

I had a great time cruising around Geist Reservoir after the install, and another cruise in MarTT's car to enjoy the new "sounds of Borla".

Another great Mod-Day in Indy!

As always, MANY more pictures in the Fotki.<ul><li><a href="http://public.fotki.com/mcphill/audi_stuff/stainless_brake_lines/">Stainless Brake Line Install Fotki</a></li></ul>

Default They are $60 rear, $90 front, or $140 for both. Peformance enhancement is likely pretty

minor if anything. Theoretically they should provide a firmer pedal feel, as they are a stiff line, where the OEM lines they replace are rubber. The rubber lines can expand under breaking, which takes more fluid/pedal travel.

The ECS lines are a plastic inner sheath, shrouded in the braided stainless outside. The outside is then covered by a vinyl that protects the from dirt.

Maintenance should be totally unaffected - the new lines just replace the exact same segments from the OEM lines.

I had to order another item from ECS, so I got these too. I probably would not have gotten them otherwise...

Default Great write up and a question....

DO they actually make your pedal feel firmer?
That's what I want, but don't want to spend the $$ for this mod if it doesn't appreciably make the pedal firmer. Thanx

Default I would not say it is "appreciable"... Though I must confess that NO mod I have done has ever

given me an "appreciable" change as measured by my butt-dyno - with the exception of Revo programming.

I also have not had a chance to work it too much yet... If I were on the fence, I would consider doing the fronts. The rears really seem like a waste, given how short the replaced section is.

Default Guys, I wanted to re-respond to your questions about performance. Today was the

first time I have really driven the car since I put the new brake lines in. The pedal definitely firms up quicker, and full brake is achieved higher in the pedal travel. I like both of these sensations.

Do keep in mind, though, that I have changed a number of things since the baseline comparison: New PBR Ceramic pads all around, flushed fluid with Valvoline synthetic (old fluid was DIRTY!), fully bled the lines, installed the Stainless Brake lines.

Anyway, just wanted to update...
