some people don't understand why to get HD's vs. sports. I've seen some morons put HD's on with lowering springs and ruin their shocks.

If you lower without going to a shorter shaft you may actually LOSE travel as the long shaft will have more of a tendency to bottom in the piston. In your case you are buying back 10mm of travel with the hats by raising the top end of the shaft relative to the spring. This is removing some of the effect of the shorter spring. Without the hats however, there is no difference in travel unless the longer shaft of the HD bottoms in the cylinder.

the springs bottoming out before the shocks have the same result I have avoided on my road car.

Bilstein sports, Boge ProGas (Sachs), Boge TurboGas (Sachs)as well as Neuspeed Sports and H&R Sports on my previous three VW's. My last car was a MKIV GTI GLX - had Bilstein Sports and H&R Sports on it.

If I were going with the Eibach sportlines, then I would go with the shorter shaft sports because the spring rates would match the shocks better (Too many rough roads here). It'll be interesting to see what you finally settle on for your current car.
