Engine braking - not a good thing?
#11
Engine runs at higher revs in lower gears. Must use gas if engine continues to run.
Want to try a test?
Cycle computer to instantaneous mpg, not avg.
Coast down from 60 mph or so in 5th (or 6th in 225) and check instant. mileage as speed goes thru 40 or so.
Coast down from 60 or so in 3rd (or 4th), check instant mileage at same point.
Just for grins, try it in neutral.
Let me know.

You should always downshift when slowing down...
whether or not you apply the brakes, so that the engine speed is appropriate for the road speed.
1) If it wears out the clutch, your not downshifting correctly. I've never had to replace a clutch.
2) If you have to brake so hard you don't have time to downshift you're too close to the guy in front.

DUDE ! just learn the real technique to downshift....
...you're not suppoesed to ride the clutch AT ALL when downshifting. I use engine braking more than anyone i know and race the car on a track every week and the last car i had, had a three year old clutch and was flawless. you ar not supposed to ride the clutch when downshifting. that's it
you're supposed to get the revs up by giving it gas while holding the clutch down and downshifting so that when you release the clutch, the gears are up to rev to go straight in with having to ride the clutch. it takes about a week to of constant effort to learn but it's only way to drive a sports car correctly ;o)

Now Try this... Turn off your car while going downhill and downshift. Notice the engine sounds ....
the same as if it was on? The computer is not a accurate system. Additionally, if you take it out of gear(or in gear, I forget), the computer is unable to calculate the Miles to go while coasting.
Downshifting does not use any gas, except the gas to use to idle.

When you are off the gas and coasting down the trottle body is closed the the injectors and at idle
..levels. It is the momentum of the vehicle that is causing the engine to turn over at higher RPMs, not combustion, so very little gas is used.

that would not be correct double-clutching (rev matching.)
simplified version: depress clutch, take car out of gear into neutral, release clutch, blip throttle to get revs up, depress clutch, drop into lower gear, release clutch.
done quickly and correctly, this makes for a very smooth downshift.
Jason, you wanna add your more refined description to this?
