Engine braking - not a good thing?

Maybe you don't even burn gas at idle.I may be wrong.But one thing I know if you don't press the gas pedal and downshift you don't burn nothing.Again, maybe even not an idle burn.Not sure.

and only 18 wheelers with "Jake Brakes" for slowing. Without them they do more harm than good.

Much of the mileage was in Hudson County, NJ, which is very abusive on cars.
When I sold it last Spring, the clutch was almost shot, but still worked (gripped in the last inch)

"foot off gas" does not equal "no gas being used." The engine would be running too lean or wouldn't run at all under engine braking if that were true (as someone mentioned below).
Under engine braking, gas is "pulled" through he system, even though you're not pushing on the pedal. Combustion continues...
engine braking uses more gas than if you simply put the car in neutral and used the brakes. The engine is running faster, hence more gas is being used.
