Default Re: Not kidding at all. I've tried it in other vehicles too. I'll stay with my claim.

Maybe you don't even burn gas at idle.I may be wrong. But one thing I know if you don't press the gas pedal and downshift you don't burn nothing.Again, maybe even not an idle burn. Not sure.
PS. It is midnite here and I have to go to bed :-) Tomorrow I will be here .Heh heh heee.Take care and BesTT.

Default I'll take some of your flogging off you and agree. Downshift on track, brakes on streets always...

and only 18 wheelers with "Jake Brakes" for slowing. Without them they do more harm than good.

Default Down shift and live a little, or next time, get the station wagon!

It's a sports car! Drive it like Steve McQueen!

Default I drove my 89 Civic 100k miles in 10 years - always downshifted and never double-clutched ....

Much of the mileage was in Hudson County, NJ, which is very abusive on cars.

When I sold it last Spring, the clutch was almost shot, but still worked (gripped in the last inch)

Default You must be joking...

"foot off gas" does not equal "no gas being used." The engine would be running too lean or wouldn't run at all under engine braking if that were true (as someone mentioned below).
Under engine braking, gas is "pulled" through he system, even though you're not pushing on the pedal. Combustion continues...

engine braking uses more gas than if you simply put the car in neutral and used the brakes. The engine is running faster, hence more gas is being used.

I've had WAY more trouble with-throw out bearings than clutch discs.

Default I don't think there is a right or wrong here as far as driving, I do think that engine braking does

..no harm.

Yes, 1000 hp brakes but only some 20 hp engine braking effect. Trunkmonkeys brake better...

Especially the ultra-rare 4-assed trunkmonkey.
