Default WOW - just checked mine - it does in fact say factory fill was 0-30 as you said
i'm shocked. I know for a fact that my 3 Avants with 1.8T's stated 5-40 and my old TT was 5-40 but it was a 180hp version.

Default I think it's because for the 225s (and S3) there was a new oil spec, VW503.01, which specified 0W30
For other 1.8Ts VW502.00 applied which specified 5W40 or 0W40.

Mine is a 2002 US 180 Quattro, I guess VAG changes their mind like people change underwear :-)
