Default Engine overheated on the freeway yesterday!!!

I was cruising my TT down the freeway running a little late for a wedding. BAM- a big red temp light came on, the temp gauge was pegged no prior signs, engine was running strong, no weird sounds, nothing. I turned off at the next exit, smoke was pouring out from underneath the car. I pulled into a gas station and shut it down, it cooled off. I checked the oil, it was fine. Then I started it up and tried to add water it seemed full. Fortunately the Audi dealer was only a mile down the road, what a lucky break. I dumped the car off and grabbed a loaner car. I was an hour late for the wedding, missed the ceremony, the reception was a party.

Back to the car, has anyone experienced overheating problems like this? I read a few posts regarding water-pump failures. My TT only has 17K miles. It seems odd that a water-pump could fail that quickly. I hope the engine isn't damaged...has anyone had a similar problem?

Default Sounds like water pump or a stuck thermostat

Hope it turns out OK...

Default well, it's a different car, but i just had the same thing happen

it was on my Neon -- was driving home one night and the temp needle pegged all the way hot. also, i lost heat. my first thought was also waterpump, however it turned out to be a blown head gasket. wierd thing was, i had no loss of power (not that neon has any to begin with), hence i never thought it was something as serious as a head gasket.

so i hope that's not the problem you had, but might want to pull the plugs and take a look in the cylinders.

Default Your'e lucky you *couldn't* add water, you could have damaged it by doing that, according to your...

description.
sounds like you wanted to add water right away, after pulling off the freeway.
You would ned to wait a long time for the engine to cool to add water to an over-heated engine.
You are lucky that it was full, or you could have cracked the block.
