but the all-weather gains of Quattro are high, and the sheer poseur-dom of driving a modern audi without quattro should turn you away from fwd models ;-) just kidding. the quattro system will be slower than FWD, but there are many other ways in which the 2 differ....

FWD may be lighter, but it only has 2 drive wheels, and they're on the wrong end of the car for quick starts. FWD can only handle so much power during launch before you get wheelspin. In theory, having 4 wheels worth of traction at launch can be A Very Good Thing! Audi claims the 180 FWD 0-60 is 7.6 sec, and the Quattro 180 is 7.7, so it's not much of a difference. Of course, the Quattro 225 is faster than the FWD 180 ... :-)

There is the obvious argument for Quattro if you are in a harsh or cold climate (which I am). But I notice nearly as much benefit from Quattro on dry pavement. Personally, I wouldn't think twice about Quattro. Get it.

Theoretically, the FWD would be faster because there is less drive-train friction to reduce HP to the ground. In practice, though, the AWD system transfers the power more evenly on startup.
My A4 is FWD, and will chirp tires where a similarly equipped Quattro will grab and go. I'm betting that my 70 to 120 time is faster, though.
